Advanced Laser Treatment for Periodontal Disease

At Family & Cosmetic Dentistry we use laser technology to treat chronic periodontal (gum) disease with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), also known as Laser Gum Surgery.
This is a big step up from traditional surgery. It uses thermal laser energy to target and vaporise diseased tissue. The process creates a virtually bloodless treatment field, requires less anaesthetic, and has minimal post op discomfort. After minimal freezing and a deep clean the laser fully disinfects the area, seals the gum pocket and stimulates the gum and bone to repair itself. Our patients love the easy recovery and are often back to work the next day. We also provide full post op care including medication and often a protective night guard.

Periodontal disease is a chronic infection. Periodontal (gum) disease have been treated with gum surgeries for a long time. Slowly lasers have taken over the traditional surgeries. Today lasers have found applications in many fields. The use of lasers in dentistry is invaluable. Lasers emit thermal energy which, when directed to and absorbed by the targeted area, has the ability to coagulate and vaporize biological tissue.
Dr. Nagwa Rofael has undergone extensive training from the Advanced Laser Institute and introduced LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) in 2012 to treat gum disease. We at Family & Cosmetic Dentistry see clients with extensive periodontal involvement and are excited to provide you with Laser Periodontal treatment for your gum disease.
Many clients with early periodontal involvement can benefit from Laser Periodontal therapy which is carried out in a blood less field, with minimal anaesthesia and minimal post-operative discomfort.
How is it done?
The area to be treated is anaesthetized with minimal freezing. Once the client feels absolutely numb in that area, a mini flap is done to gain access to the deeper tissues. A deep cleaning is done followed by complete disinfection of the area with the laser light. Laser seals the pocket to allow the gum and bone support to repair itself. Post-operative instructions are given and follow up is done within a week.
We at Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, have made laser safety absolutely essential to help ensure a safe environment to all the staff and the clients in the treatment area. The client, dentist and the assistants wear the appropriate eyewear specific for the laser wavelength being used.
We prescribe you to take antibiotics to prevent the possibility of infection and to take Ibuprofen to control inflammation and swelling, if any. You will start taking both medication the day of surgery. You can expect to return to work the day after surgery.
A night guard is advised to prevent trauma from tooth to tooth contact, which can be one of the contributing factors of periodontal disease. Minor adjustments to your teeth may be necessary so that they all function equally.
