How Composite Resin Veneers Are Done?

Much like bonding, the front surface of the tooth is prepared to help the composite resin stick to the enamel of the tooth. The composite resin that matches the colour of your natural teeth is chosen so that the veneer blends in with your teeth. The composite resin is built in layers. A bright light is used to harden each layer of the composite resin. After the last layer of composite resin is hardened, your dentist shapes and polishes it to form your tooth. The finished tooth looks natural and smooth.

How Porcelain Veneers Are Done?

With porcelain veneers, you may need a local anesthetic (freezing). To apply a veneer, a very small amount of the original tooth enamel must be removed, usually less than a millimeter. This is essential as it creates room for the porcelain veneer to fit within the mouth and most accurately restore natural tooth function while creating an even better appearance than the original tooth. Then a mold of your teeth is made. This mold is used to custom-make your porcelain veneers. In the meantime, temporary veneers are placed over the prepared tooth. These are worn until your porcelain veneers are ready. The temporary veneers are very fragile and need to be treated gently during eating and cleaning as they come loose very easily. On your next visit, the temporary veneers are removed and the tooth is prepared with a special chemical to help porcelain veneers stick to your teeth better. The porcelain veneers are then glued to your teeth one by one, using composite resin cement.

Maintenance of a Porcelain Veneer

Maintaining porcelain veneers is actually quite simple: Treat them as you would your original teeth, with routine brushing and flossing. Use non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste as recommended.

If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, you may be advised a nighttime bite guard so you do not damage your veneers.

Finally, the key to a good maintenance is to be regular with your re-care appointments to check for any signs of potential failure.

Who Can Get Veneers?

Good Candidates:

  • Aesthetic concerns: If you want to improve your smile you can look into veneers.
  • Specific issues: Candidates have one or more of the following:
    • Stained or discolored teeth
    • Chipped, cracked or worn down teeth
    • Gapped or uneven teeth
    • Misshapen or irregularly sized teeth
  • Ages: Generally you must be at least 18 years old to be considered for cosmetic procedures like veneers as your adult teeth should be fully developed.
  • Good oral health:You need to have healthy gums and teeth with no extensive decay or infection.

Candidates that are not a good fit:

  • Underlying dental problems:You may need to address tooth decay, gum disease or oral infections before veneers.
  • Insufficient enamel: Not enough enamel on the tooth surface can prevent veneers from bonding:
  • Bruxism:Teeth grinding or clenching can chip or break porcelain veneers.
  • Severe damage:Severely cracked or fractured teeth may require a different solution like a crown instead of a veneer.

How Does It Work?

First your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy. Your lips and gums will be covered with an isolation material to protect them during the treatment. Then, the Zoom whitening gel is applied on the teeth, which is activated by the Zoom! light source. The gel and light work together to gently break up the stains on your teeth. After three 15-minute applications within one hour, the gel is rinsed off and the treatment is complete — leaving you with a brighter, whiter smile.

Managing Sensitivity

Each session can be customized to maximize patient comfort and expectations. If you are concerned about sensitive teeth, the system also includes desensitizers to help minimize sensitivity and protect your tooth enamel.

Everyone responds differently to whitening, and sensitivity is sometimes a side effect of whitening treatments.

We recommend to start using a sensitivity toothpaste like Fluoridex or Sensodyne a week before and after your treatments. You can also use a mild desensitizer like Relief ACP in conjunction with your treatments to further minimize sensitivity.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment also known as endodontic therapy helps you retain the original tooth or teeth, when severely infected or damaged resulting in death of the dental pulp (nerve). Failure to remove the diseased pulp can result in building up of an abscess around the root of the tooth. Retaining your original tooth/teeth prevents TMJ pain, bite problems and movement of adjacent teeth that would lead to harmful results.

When Do I Need a Rct?

  • Pain while chewing or biting food
  • A sudden intense pain in the tooth.
  • An unexpected pain in the infected tooth that wakes you up at night or a nagging pain.
  • Sensitivity to cold or hot beverages and/or foods
  • Loose tooth
  • A pain that lasts approximately four to six weeks after a filling or the replacement of a filling.
  • Radiating pain or pressure in the region of the eyes, neck ,ears ,head and jaws

How is RCT Done?

The infected area is first anesthetized before placing a rubber dam. An opening is made through the crown of the tooth to remove the infected pulp. The canals of the teeth or the tooth are cleaned with small dental instruments or files alternated with hand-held or mechanical instruments with irrigants. The canals are shaped to the required size and filled with an endodontic sealer. The cavity would be filled either with a temporary or a permanent restoration. Antibiotics may be prescribed to quicken the healing process and avoid further infection. The second visit to the dentist would involve the removal of the temporary filling with a permanent one and the tooth or teeth would be recapped with a gold or porcelain crown.

Will the RCT Hurt?

Not with today’s technology and anesthetic options! The concerned site is anesthetized and most therapy can be completed in one sitting. Some patients may have post operative symptoms like slight inflammation or soreness which can easily be managed by OTC pain killers. We use techniques to reduce pain and anxiety during the procedure.
