Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment

The fluoride treatments you receive in a dental office have more fluoride than over-the-counter fluoride mouthwash or toothpaste.

Fluoride has a positive effect on oral health by making teeth more resistant to decay. Fluoride can also prevent or reverse tooth decay that has started. Children are more susceptible to tooth decay. We can assess your child’s risk of developing tooth decay and advise you of an appropriate level of fluoride protection. Additional in-office fluoride treatment is recommended if a child/an adult has a history of cavities or decay. The fluoride treatments you receive in a dental office have more fluoride than over-the-counter fluoride mouthwash or toothpaste. They are used for both children and adults. In -office treatments also are different chemically and stay on the teeth longer.

It is important that you talk to your Dentist or Dental Hygienist about any fluoride products you are using. Your dentist or hygienist can consider all sources of supplemental fluoride and determine which are best for you or your child.

Fluoride in the dental office may be used in some of the following circumstances:

  • Dry mouth: Many prescription medications reduce saliva flow or otherwise create dry mouth. A reduction in saliva increases cavity risk.
  • Gum recession: Which exposes part of the root surface of teeth and makes them more susceptible to decay.
  • Protection around the margins of crowns or bridges.
  • Fluoride can keep the teeth strong and cavity-free when applied around the orthodontic appliances.
  • History of recurrent cavities.
  • Poor oral hygiene: Fluoride could be just the thing to keep your neglect from leading to cavities between your teeth.
  • Sensitive teeth: Due to diets high in acidic foods and beverages, gum recession, and increased use of whitening products , teeth can become sensitive over time. Fluoride treatments re-mineralize tooth enamel and reduce that sensitivity.
  • Patients undergoing radiation treatment for cancer also benefit from topical fluoride applications. Radiation damages saliva glands, thus greatly reducing the flow of saliva which greatly increases the risk of cavities in the mouth.
