TMJ Treatment

The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located on either side of your head, just in front of your ears. This joint, in combination with other muscles and ligaments, lets you chew, swallow, speak and yawn. When you have a problem with the muscle, bone or other tissue in the area in and around the TMJ, you may have a Temporomandibular Disorder(TMD)

Signs or symptoms of TMD

  • Pain and tenderness in or around the ear, the jaw joint, or the muscles of the jaw, face or temples.
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth.
  • Clicking, popping, crunching or grinding noise when you chew, yawn or open your mouth.
  • Associated neck pain and headaches.

In most cases, TMDs are caused by a combination of factors like joint disease, such as arthritis. Bruxism (tooth clenching or grinding) ,head or neck muscle tension and stress may make TMD symptoms worse.

How is TMD treated?

It is important to note that treatment always works best with a team approach of self-care joined with professional care.

Treatment plan for TMD requires a thorough examination and, if needed, appropriate radiographs. This treatment plan may include relaxation techniques, medicine for pain, inflammation or tense muscles.

Your dentist may suggest wearing a night guard, made of clear plastic and fits over the biting surfaces of the teeth of one jaw so that you bite against the splint rather than your teeth. This often helps in the relaxation of your jaw joints and muscles.

At times, you may also require referrals to an Orthodontist / Prosthodontist to correct your bite and/or an Oral Surgeon.
